Einsiedeln

Switzerland, officially known as the Swiss Confederation, is a landlocked Alpine country in Central Europe. The country, which borders Germany to the north, France to the west, Italy to the south, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east, was historically a confederation, and has been a federation since 1848. It is a federation of relatively autonomous cantons, some of which have a history of confederacy that goes back more than 700 years, arguably putting them among the world's oldest surviving republics. With an area of 41,285 square kilometers, Switzerland is a relatively small country. It comprises three basic topographical areas namely the Swiss Alps, the Swiss plateau, and the Jura Mountains. Switzerland has four official languages including German, French, Italian and Romansh.

One of the eminent and favorite destinations for vacation lovers in Switzerland is Einsiedeln. It is a small municipality located in the canton of Schwyz best known for its monastery, the Benedictine Einsiedeln Abbey. Located on the southern end of the Zurich Lake, Einsiedeln has an altitude of 880 meters above the sea level. The municipality is also made up of six localities that include Bennau, Egg, Willerzell, Euthal, Gross and Trachslau.

According to the historical findings it can be affirmed that Einsiedeln owes its origin to the nomads of the region almost 12,000 years ago. Archaeologists have discovered numerous artifacts of the Stone Age and the Bronze Age. Based upon this evidence, it would appear that at that time there were no fixed settlements in the area.

Einsiedeln is also the most frequented pilgrimage destination in Switzerland due to its cultural attractions. The Benedictine Einsiedeln Abbey, located within the village, is the site of the most considerable baroque church in Switzerland with the grace chapel and a statue of the Black Madonna, which is very popular with Roman Catholic pilgrims.

Today Einsiedeln experiences a boom with day tourists, owing to the clear air and mountain views. The village also has its own ski jump, ski lifts, ski tows and winter sports centers, which are in the nearly area of Hoch-Ybrig and Brunni. The nearby reservoir called as Sihlsee, is used in summer for swimming, surfing and sailing, and in the winter for ice-skating.

Einsiedeln, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place. It is also the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
