Fribourg

Switzerland, officially known as the Swiss Confederation, is a landlocked Alpine country in Central Europe. The country, which borders Germany to the north, France to the west, Italy to the south, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east, was historically a confederation, and has been a federation since 1848. It is a federation of relatively autonomous cantons, some of which have a history of confederacy that goes back more than 700 years, arguably putting them among the world's oldest surviving republics. With an area of 41,285 square kilometers, Switzerland is a relatively small country. It comprises three basic topographical areas namely the Swiss Alps, the Swiss plateau, and the Jura Mountains. Switzerland has four official languages including German, French, Italian and Romansh.

Fribourg is a town in Switzerland known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages. It is the capital of Swiss canton of Fribourg and is located on the banks of river Sarine. The city has a total land area of 9.32 square kilometers and a population of 36,405 inhabitants as of January 2003.

Fribourg was founded in the 1157 century by Berchtold IV von Zahringen. Its most ancient part is conveniently located on a former peninsula of the River Sarine, protected on three sides by steep cliffs. The city and its canton joined the Swiss Confederation in 1481. Earlier, it was also a part of the Sonderbund, a separate alliance of Catholic cantons, for the short period of its existence between 1845 and 1847.

Today, Fribourg's agglomeration numbers over 70,000 inhabitants, and includes the surrounding municipalities of Givisiez, Granges-Paccot, Villars-sur-Glane, Marly, as well as Corminboeuf, Belfaux, Grolley, and stretches as far as Dudingen and Tafers on the right bank of the Sarine.

Fribourg, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited places. It is also the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
