Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a landlocked Alpine country in Central Europe. It had been a federation, since 1848, of relatively autonomous cantons, some of which have a history of confederacy that goes back more than 700 years, arguably putting them among the world's oldest surviving republics. Switzerland comprises three basic topographical areas namely the Swiss Alps, the Swiss plateau, and the Jura Mountains. Switzerland has four official languages, German in the north and centre, French to the west, Italian in the south and Romansh in the southeast. Switzerland has a strong economy in finance and banking, and a long and strong tradition of political and military neutrality.
Moutier is a town in the Canton of Bern, a canton located in west-central Switzerland. It is located in an area called Bernese Jura, Jura Bernois in French, which sits between the Canton of Jura and the German-speaking part of the Canton of Bern. The people of Moutier speak French, although the Canton of Bern is mostly German-speaking.
Moutier's population was estimated to 7793 as of 2003, living within an area of 19.53 square kilometers. It is situated at an altitude of 535 meters above sea level. The German name for the town is Munster, but it is not frequently used. Moutier's area is called the Prevote. It is a valley crossed by a river, called the Birse. There are mountains are all around Moutier, and they are dug by water.
The mechanical industry has a large part in the life of Moutier. The area has a lot of factories. They develop and produce high precision machine tools, automation and machining. Moutier is recognized as being a world leader in precision making as its watch industry is known worldwide.
