New Online Grammar for German

(PRWEB) October1, 2004 -- Canoo today announced that it has published a comprehensive grammar for German at canoo.net. Over 1500 new German grammar pages are now accessible in English and German.

Canoo.net offers a high-quality online reference for German. The new grammar complements the popular dictionaries and glossaries already available at the web site, and provides a useful resource for speakers and learners of German.

"The Canoo.net grammar is well-structured, consistent, and intelligible. It is a valuable contribution for developing analytical language skills", commented Prof. Dr. Annelies H?i-Buhofer, Director of the Department of German Linguistics and Dean of the Faculty at the University of Basel. "Both adults and students from 4th grade onwards will profit from this resource. In contrast to many printed grammars, Canoo.net is easy to use and easy to understand. Students and casual users will like its interactive search function, cross-links, and glossary of linguistic terms. Language teachers will like its comprehensiveness and unique integration with large dictionaries."

Practical Search Interface

A practical search interface, located at the top of each page, helps the user to find the relevant pages she or he is looking for. A search for "lassen", for example, leads to grammar pages that describe how the verb is used in imperative sentences such as "Lasst uns gehen!". Additional links point to dictionary entries containing inflection tables of "lassen", and derivation tree diagrams that describe the connection to "ssen", "unterlassen" and other related words. Similarly, a search for "Adjektiv" creates a link to a linguistic glossary that defines the term, and links to the grammar pages where the role and use of adjectives are defined. By default, the search function searches the entire site and automatically includes synonyms during look-up. For example, if a user enters "Nomen", the algorithm willalso look up "Substantiv" and "Hauptwort". All results are displayed as a structured link list.

Alternatively, users can browse the site by means of the navigation bar or via the index. Access to all dictionaries and grammar pages is free.

English Version

All pages have been translated into English, and users can easily toggle between the German grammar explanation and its English translation.

Interactive Reference

Truly interactive, Canoo.net showcases the advantages of web-based learning resources. All content can be accessed via hyperlink from any external web site, document, or digital presentation. Teachers may use these web addresses to refer to a particular section at Canoo.net as part of a web-based exercise or tutorial.

Clicking "Terms with Link" or "Fachbegriffe mit Link" in the upper right corner of a Canoo.net web page highlights all linguistic terminology defined in Canoo's glossary of linguistic terms. Follow a link to view the corresponding entry in the glossary.

Users can consult spelling, inflection, morphology and word formation dictionaries with over 250,000 lexicon entries. Entries also offer a direct link to the largest online German-English dictionary LEO. For example, a search term such as Nonstopflug generates links to all Canoo.net dictionaries.

The spelling dictionary is widely used to check if and how a word is affected by the German spelling reform. The dictionary includes Swiss and Austrian spelling variants, as well as several publisher style guides. Similarly, the inflection tables are useful to check the correct form of a word. There are numerous cross-references between the dictionaries and the grammar.
