Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a landlocked Alpine country in Central Europe. The country, which borders Germany to the north, France to the west, Italy to the south, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east, was historically a confederation, and has been a federation since 1848. Switzerland is a federation of relatively autonomous cantons, some of which have a history of confederacy that goes back more than 700 years, arguably putting them among the world's oldest surviving republics. With an area of 41,285 square kilometers, Switzerland is a relatively small country. Switzerland comprises three basic topographical areas namely the Swiss Alps, the Swiss plateau, and the Jura Mountains. Switzerland has four official languages namely German, French, Italian and Romansh.
Rapperswil is a small town in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. It is located at the east side of Lake Zurich. In the local dialect it is sometimes referred to as Rappi. The centre of the town is of medieval origin and dominated by the castle. The town is considered one of the most significant traffic junctions in the region. The town's main sights are concentrated in the centre and can be seen while strolling through the medieval alleys. The main sights of Rapperswil are its roses, the castle, the reconstructed wooden bridge to Hurden with its bridge chapel, a Capuchin monastery. There are also a number of churches, chapels, as well as the nearby Wurmsbach Abbey.
Rapperswil is often referred to as the town of roses, because of its extensive display of roses in three designated parks. No less than 15,000 plants of 600 different kinds are on display between June and October every year in the town. There is also a park of roses accessible to blind and disabled people in the centre of the town. The castle of Rapperswil probably dates back to the 13th century. It dominates the old town and is placed on a hill. On the lands surrounding the castle deer are kept. Since 1870 the castle has been home to the National Polish Museum, created by emigrants.
Rapperswil is a city known for its culture, exotic locations, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages. Rapperswil is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
