Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a landlocked Alpine country in Central Europe. The country, which borders Germany to the north, France to the west, Italy to the south, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east, was historically a confederation, and has been a federation since 1848. Switzerland is a federation of relatively autonomous cantons, some of which have a history of confederacy that goes back more than 700 years, arguably putting them among the world's oldest surviving republics. With an area of 41,285 square kilometers, Switzerland is a relatively small country. Switzerland comprises three basic topographical areas namely the Swiss Alps, the Swiss plateau, and the Jura Mountains. Switzerland has four official languages namely German, French, Italian and Romansh.
Sarnen is the capital of the canton of Obwalden situated on the shores of Lake Sarnen in Switzerland. It has a population of just fewer than 10,000 and is surrounded by lovely countryside and beautiful mountains. Sarnen is located at about 20 kilometers towards the south of Lucerne. Over the years Sarnen developed into an important trading center and it can look back with pride over its centuries of history. Everywhere, the historic town centre provides evidence of its exciting past and ever-changing history.
The town of Sarnen has been experiencing steady growth over the past years. It has become more attractive due to its proximity to Lucerne. Many commuters work in Lucerne and use the motorway or railway service to get to work. Many people prefer the more relaxed and not so urban lifestyle of Sarnen to living in a major Swiss city. People from Sarnen like to point out the beautiful landscapes surrounding them. Excellent outdoor sports opportunities can be found in the region around Sarnen. Sarnen is rather small, still it has all you need including supermarkets, primary and secondary education, hospital, public administration and a police station. Sarnen is on the shore of the idyllic Lake Sarnen. Lake Sarnen covers approximately an area of 7.5 square kilometers. The town is surrounded by mountain chains and a protected bog can be found nearby. Sarnen is one of the preeminent, historical and potential tourism destinations that are located in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland.
