Spanish-German Dictionary links to Canoo.net for Grammar Content

Basel, Switzerland (PRWEB) August 11, 2005 -- Canoo today announced that it is cooperating with the Spanish-German dictionary, DIX, to provide further grammatical information during dictionary lookup for DIX users.

Similarly to Canoo's collaboration with the world's largest English-German dictionary, LEO, the Spanish dictionary now newly includes Canoo.net grammar links. The Canoo.net links are marked by a [G and point users to the corresponding inflection table for a query. The result list displays a number of possible German translations. Click the [G link next to an entry to display the inflection table for the German word.

"Our collaboration with Canoo is great. In only short time we were able to add the German grammar to all terms available in our dictionary. Many users have asked for this key feature and with Canoo we have found a partner that can provide a comprehensive and professional suite of grammar websites for such a service" says Dr. Raimundo Sierra, founder and maintainer of DIX. "From its first day available, the [G link has been extensively used and has further boosted the popularity of DIX."

The Web-based Grammar Resource for German

Canoo.net was launched in the year 2000 and currently registers over 500,000 visits per month. Truly interactive, the online grammar and dictionaries showcase the advantages of web-based learning resources. All content can be accessed via hyperlink from any external web site, document, or digital presentation. Teachers and students may use these web addresses to refer to a particular section at Canoo.net as part of a web-based exercise or tutorial. Users can consult spelling, inflection, morphology and word formation dictionaries with over 250,000 lexicon entries. Entries offer a direct link to the German-English dictionary LEO. The online grammar, launched in September 2004, provides over 1500 pages of grammatical explanations in German and in English. A practical search interface finds 100 % relevant hits. The spelling dictionary is widely used to check if and how a word is affected by the German spelling reform. The dictionary includes Swiss and Austrian spelling variants, as well as several publisher style guides. Similarly, the inflection tables are useful to check the correct form of a word. There are numerous cross-references between the dictionaries and the grammar. For example, a search term such as "dass" generates links to all relevant dictionary entries and grammar pages.

Clicking "Terms with Link" or "Fachbegriffe mit Link" in the upper right corner of a Canoo.net web page highlights all linguistic terminology defined in Canoo's glossary of linguistic terms. Follow a link to view the corresponding entry in the glossary.

High Quality Data

A dedicated authoring environment for lexicographers ensures a high quality of data at Canoo.net. The base dictionary was developed over more than 10 years at the University of Basel under the direction of Prof. Dr. Marc Domenig, now CEO of Canoo Engineering AG.

Canoo.net uses WMTrans products, demonstrating how this morphology software is integrated into language learning applications.

About DIX

Work on the online Spanish-German dictionary started in April 2003 and was first published in September 2003. Since then the dictionary has grown progressively, fuelled by vocabulary suggestions from its users and now contains over 100,000 entries. In order to provide high quality translations, all translations are reviewed by a group of volunteers. All members have a long-standing experience in both languages. The daily number of queries lies between 20,000 to 80,000 per day and has reached over 1.7 million queries in April 2005.

The dictionary offers a clear and user-friendly web interface, as well as several discussion forums, e.g. for the open communication of errors or user-to-user translation services. Access is free.
