St-Marie Castle: Home of the Vaud Government


Saint Marie Castle is located in the city of Lausanne along the shores of the Lake Geneva and really close to the French city of Évian les Bains. Situated near the beautiful city Geneva, it is the capital of the Canton Vaud. The castle is on the edge of the old town Lausanne, and nowadays, it is used as the main office for the government of the Canton Vaud.

If you want to get a better view of the castle, all you have to do is to climb the 160 steps of the cathedral of Lausanne. From there, you will be able to see the whole castle and have a perfect view of the Lake Geneva too. In fact, this is the best point to get a nice photo of the castle and the lake. Moreover, you can enjoy walking through the medieval streets of the Lausanne old town next to the castle.

The castle was built during the 16th century by the bishops of Lausanne to protect themselves from the people of Bern and Fribourg who were against the ecclesiastical power. In this way, the bishops were protected inside the castle. If you visit the city of Lausanne and you want to get inside the castle, you must keep in mind that it is almost impossible because is the home of the government of Vaud.
